A master system administrator can manage hundreds of computers with ease, which means that companies with 20-30 computers and a full-time system administrator are not fully utilizing this individual's core strengths.

Remote System Administration - Illinois

print this article

Not to knock his design skills, but the in-house system administrator is probably not the best web designer. Maybe your firm is lucky to have creativity and raw troubleshooting horsepower locked into a 5'10" frame, but for better or worse, most system administrators probably couldn't do it all, even if they wanted to. And even though the younger generation of tech support people love to try to do it all, older and more experienced system administrators know the value of being able to take a minute or two of uninterrupted time with a cup of coffee.

That said, the in-house system administrator is a great asset to any organization, so we're proposing that he or she may be better employed creating the next-generation infrastructure needed to move business to the next-level. That means researching new products, trying them out, recommending which brand of laptop the executives should buy, rushing in just in time to avert a network meltdown, physical network topology mapping and troubleshooting, and other related tasks.

A "remote system administration" service such as that offered by Transparen can enable clients to work efficiently without subjecting the in-house system administrators to frequent, petty interruptions. While it may be fun and exciting to respond to emergencies, it may detract from core mission-critical tasks such as IT architecture planning, deployment planning, contingency planning, backup architecture testing, network upkeep, and other systems development assignments.

Boutique Firms Well-Positioned in Current Economy
While some boutique firms have suffered serious blows from the economy, many are seeing distinct advantages over larger competitors when it comes to weathering the storm, say boutique leaders and law firm observers. Boutiques generally have much lower overhead costs, little to no major debt, and more flexibility when it comes to costs and billing rates. One boutique chairman likens the difference between big firms and boutiques to the difference between driving a Lincoln Town Car and a Ferrari.

Networking Success for the Single Attorney
Previously, the American Dream meant getting married and having kids and a suburban life, but now many people are savoring their unmarried lifestyles. For single attorneys, being unattached doesn't have to negatively impact networking. They can leverage the freedom of being single to creatively develop their business networks. With the benefits of being single, though, come some drawbacks, such as having to deal more with drawing the line between professional and personal contacts.

More Americans Foregoing Lawyers and Representing Themselves
The number of people serving as their own lawyers is on the rise across the U.S., and the cases are no longer limited to uncontested divorces and small claims. Even people embroiled in child custody cases, potentially devastating lawsuits and bankruptcies are representing themselves, legal experts say. Court systems are clogged with filings from people unfamiliar with legal procedure, and many states now offer self-help Web sites or other services to alleviate the problems.

Financial Crisis Especially Hard for Solos, Psychiatrist Says
Lawyer-turned-psychiatrist Elizabeth Tillinghast says that the current economic crisis is "a second 9/11" in which lawyers are "worried about generating money, collecting money and holding on to their jobs." And Tillinghast suggests that for solo and small-firm attorneys, the personal toll can be higher than for other attorneys, because they are more immediately affected. Such attorneys also tend to become more personally involved with their clients, which can also have an impact, says Tillinghast.

How One Small Firm Is Coping With the Economic Crisis
In 23 years, Los Angeles firm Richardson & Patel had never let anyone go. Even during the dot-com bust, the firm, which focuses primarily on corporate and securities work, had continued to grow. But in September, the firm laid off five associates and six staff members. "It was the hardest thing I've ever done," says partner Nimish Patel. Back in August 2007, the firm took some steps in response to a perceived slowdown, but things didn't improve. Eventually, Patel realized he'd have to do something drastic.

Sanctions Upheld Against Lawyer for Informing Client About Trade Secrets
A California appeals court affirmed sanctions of almost $44,000 against an IP lawyer last week for informing her client that trade secrets, which the opposing party intended to be filed under seal, were in the court's public file. The court ruled that attorney Joanna Mendoza should have known she was violating a protective order even though the document was publicly available, noting that 250 of the document's 800 pages were marked confidential and the front page said it was filed under seal.

Titan of Torts Loses Contract Dispute Over Associate Bonus
Robert I. Reardon has won so many multimillion-dollar settlements and verdicts for plaintiffs that he's a veritable titan of torts. But in his long-running contract fight over a former associate's bonus, Reardon suffered a recent loss before the Connecticut Appellate Court. Not only did the court affirm an award of a $50,000 bonus to the former associate, but it remanded the case to allow the lower court to determine whether Reardon's contract breach required him to pay double damages.

First Trial Under Landmark Fla. Tobacco Ruling to Begin
The widow of a smoker who died from lung cancer brings the nation's biggest cigarette producer to court this week in the first trial spawned by a Florida Supreme Court ruling that decreed smoking is dangerous and addictive and causes disease. But before Elaine Hess can benefit from the landmark decision in the wake of the death of her husband, Stuart, plaintiffs lawyers must prove that he would have been part of a class of sick Florida smokers that was disbanded by the 2006 court decision.
